Our butter dish is low and long, and most sticks of butter are shorter than the butter dish, as well as tall enough to press against the underside of the lid, like this:
I have heard legend that there are sticks of butter that will fit -- such as the ones I grew up with in Ohio -- but that they are fairly rare on the west coast.
` I've tried to tell people this, but they didn't believe me... until now -- or should I say, this past January, when I bought this stick of butter! As you can see, there is space above the top of the lid, and it does indeed fill out the length better!
So, THEY DO EXIST! CASE CLOSED! I was so excited that I put a sign on the butter dish so that everyone in the house would notice this extraordinary find! They found it to be somewhat amusing.
Please, contain your enthusiasm.
Anyway, I've got a paper to continue writing. See ya later!

Just as I had suspected...
...I'm not really crazy, I have ADD. Apparently I didn't even have to do all that research, the internet quiz knew all along!

Crazy Quiz from Dumb Spot!
Dumb Quizzes | MySpace Quizzes & Quotes | Make a Quiz
Okay, that was kind of... dumb. In a spot-like way. But hey, at least I got another post up on the right blog on the right day... right? Even more amazingly, I somehow avoided becoming a member of DumbSpot!

You must watch Dr. Horrible - and right now you can see it all!
And, if you've seen it already, you might be tempted to watch it again! In any case, this is for you, my unwilling subjects, to be subjected to!
Yeah I know... post numero tres having to do with Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog. What's the big deal? Why have I suddenly started acting like some kind of horny fan girl? Am I really that pathetic? Don't I have anything better to write about?
` Yes I do - and I have been - but it's like this;
` I didn't expect to be able to even watch it again without paying five bucks on iTunes, but I just happened to see Dr. Horrible on MySpaceTV: And this only because of a very rare occurrence - roomie number 1, B-Dizzle, needed to do something online, or otherwise I would have not found it when I did.
"What?" I thought at the title. "Surely it can't be the actual musical... the whole thing...." Oh yes, it's being hosted on Hulu a magical land where there are actually more viewing options than on my blog.
Then, I showed it to my roomie number 2, Director Nathan Lee (having permanently moved in yesterday), who, being a wacky filmmaker and all - thought that it was brilliant. That's right. He thought it was brilliant, while I had to bribe Lou Ryan just to watch it (yes, with sexual favors!), and he just made fun!
Maybe it's a superhero thing?
` However, when Lou Ryan walked into the room, he became glued to the screen and eventually - once we got the glue off - he agreed with Nate.
Anyway, I thought I'd cram this post in ASAP instead of finish the one I was working on last night - considering that it can be done in a few minutes instead of hours. Also, I had a really long day at work, having to sub for someone else, so I don't have time anyway.
` And now I have a blue eyed fuzzball sitting on my lap, purring and licking my face, so I had better go - they can be quite a handful. Pth! Creature hair!

Do I have ADD? My personal progress report. (Don't laugh.)
` Many people are convinced that a debilitating mental disorder called Attention Deficit Disorder does not exist - however I can vouch that it does. How?
` Hey, look! Shoes!
` Sorry about that. It seems I've been living with so little focus that I can scarcely function without some kind of intervention. What's that like? Here's a little something I wrote toward the end of January 2007, back when I was just starting to try Lou Ryan's Ritalin:
` It is possible that my ADD was caused by the extreme childhood abuse and learned helplessness I endured - in which case it isn't proper ADD - though I can tell you that Amazing Superhero Lou Ryan was indeed born with it.
` And it has been debilitating for him!
` Each time he doesn't take Ritalin for a long while, he reverts back to his old mental habits of not being able to focus or pay attention, slides out of more productive routines and as a result he can barely keep up with chores, winds up making bad choices, and eventually goes back into debt.
` Now that he has the money for medication, he's 'able to get stuff done' as he puts it. I've found the same result for myself. Never before have I been so competent. And I thought I was just irresponsible by nature!
` Back in January, I had gone to a website that asks a whole bunch of questions that may give one an idea of whether or not one has ADD. I answered them back then, though I'll now add some additional answers for things that have changed. Contrast and compare!
Past History
1.__*History of ADHD symptoms in childhood, such as distractibility, short attention span, impulsivity or restlessness. ADHD doesn't start at age 30.
` That's a bit of an understatement - I had serious problems in those areas, went to Special Ed, didn't feel special even though I have 160 IQ! Abuse also had to do with most of it.
2.__History of not living up to potential in school or work (report cards with comments such as "not living up to potential")
` Let's think about this 160 IQ, in Special Ed... do you think that's not living up to potential? I also frequently got bad grades!
3.__History of frequent behavior problems in school (mostly for males)
` Extremely. Many a brawl was fought. I felt completely helpless to control myself, though this is also precisely the effect my dad worked hard to achieve through his conditioning, brainwashing and terrorism.
4.__History of bedwetting past age 5
` ...yes.
5.__Family history of ADHD , learning problems, mood disorders or substance abuse problems
` I think a little of all of those things are in my family, including some level of bipolar disorder, alcoholism, paranoia, delusions, psychotic rampaging, obsessive compulsive disorder, etc.
Short Attention Span/Distractibility
6.__*Short attention span, unless very interested in something
` Yes. You can see this with books - even books that are interesting I cannot read for very long unless they are extremely engaging.
` ...Now that I've improved a bit, I am capable of focusing on books... though I've noticed that when I start to feel suddenly bored with them it's apparently because I've been blocking out the sound of someone talking and haven't understood much of what I'd just read.
` My brain gets very tired very quickly from that and so it seems to cause an intense feeling of disinterest. Once it is quiet again, however, I can resume with the same interest I had before.
7.__*Easily distracted, tendency to drift away (although at times can be hyperfocused)
` Oh yes. Hyperfocusing is very rare - usually I try to get something done and wind up staring at the wall instead.
` ...Hyperfocusing is now something that happens more frequently. It's very useful for piano training.
8.__Lacks attention to detail, due to distractibility
` Yeah! Even, usually, when I'm doing artwork or composing music, there's a lot of unfinished things and details that get glossed over. (When I can't miss details due to scientific scrutiny, my brain winds up barely able to function and I can scarcely talk coherently.)
` ...This is much reduced now, at least when I am feeling mentally refreshed. When my brain is tired, though, I have trouble considering details. Including details of social interactions, which is... troublesome.
9.__Trouble listening carefully to directions
` 'Tis the most frequent reason I get lost.
` ...Sometimes I'm actually able to pay sufficient attention these days. Or at least I think I am, considering the fact that I was lost for an hour the other day, and considering the fact that I got bad grades last quarter because I wasn't able to remember how to do my assignments.
10.__Frequently misplaces things
` This is one reason I try to keep my belongings to a minimum. I also have trouble keeping track of what I'm doing with my belongings.
11.__Skips around while reading, or goes to the end first, trouble staying on track
` Sometimes it's the only way I can make myself stay a few minutes longer on a book.
` ...Now I prefer to stop reading and do something else for a few minutes... if I can remember!
12.__Difficulty learning new games, because it is hard to stay on track during directions
` Oh yes. This is why I don't know how to play many games - I usually just jump into it without caring about small details such as how to play.
13.__Easily distracted during sex, causing frequent breaks or turn-offs during lovemaking
` It is almost impossible to stay interested in sex while I am trying to have it - usually I think about everything but sex. Then again, I'm sexually dysfunctional.
` ...Now I am able to keep track of it for about thirty seconds at a time, if I really concentrate.
14.__Poor listening skills
` ...What?
` Often it takes too much of my focus just to be conscious - forget about listening to people talking.
` ...I'm a little better now. Sometimes, I even know what's going on around me! I can even pay attention to the teacher if I sit in the front row and don't hear people whispering!
15.__Tendency to be easily bored (tunes out)
` I think the most prominent feature of my awareness is the sensation of reality washing over me.
` ...Now I am much more engaged at certain times, at least when I feel relaxed.
Restlessness
16.__Restlessness, constant motion, legs moving, fidgeting
` Quite often, at least when I'm not relaxed enough. When I was a kid, I constantly had to fidget and stand up because sitting still almost hurt.
17.__Has to be moving in order to think
` Almost all of my speech is directly associated with movement.
` ...I've noticed that after my daily workouts, I am much better able to think for a few hours.
18.__Trouble sitting still, such as trouble sitting in one place for too long, sitting at a desk job for long periods, sitting through a movie
` Uh yeah. Sitting still is only something I can do when I am doing something that involves having a very short attention span. Like blogging about ten million things at a time like I do - resulting in several posts at a time, only one getting finished.
` ...Now that I am taking Ritalin, I have a new ability; to pay attention to movies! Because they actually can register in my brain, I am discovering wonderful things such as 'plots' and 'sequences of events'.
` If you haven't guessed, beforehand movies were nothing but disconnected events that didn't make much sense to me and were thus boring.
19.__An internal sense of anxiety or nervousness
` It used to be debilitating, though it's not too bad anymore.
` ...Even less debilitating than ever!
Impulsivity
20.__Impulsive, in words and/or actions (spending)
` Yes, I have to be careful about what I say and do in life - this is why I've learned to keep my mouth shut and have a hard time figuring out what to say.
` Spending is something I just tell myself not to do unless it is critical because if I don't watch it, I can wind up running out of money.
` ...I've developed some better habits that get me through the day without screwing up too much.
21.__Say just what comes to mind without considering its impact (tactless)
` I have had a huge problem with that in the past, though I generally don't make people cry anymore - I have learned to put a lid on it.
` ...Now I insult people only very occasionally, though I sometimes talk more than I did.
22.__Trouble going through established channels, trouble following proper procedure, an attitude of "read the directions when all else fails"
` Yes, it is hard to remember what I'm supposed to do oftentimes, especially when things go wrong. I used to just curl up in a ball, though if things get really hairy I call Lou Ryan.
` I don't even have to call Lou Ryan much anymore. I also have plenty of lists and things. I don't generally remember to consult them, but sometimes I remember well enough that I don't need to.
23.__Impatient, low frustration tolerance
` Hell yeah!! I don't even want to talk about it.
` ...Now I'm less frustrated, though since my standards are higher, I don't tolerate even small amounts of frustration. I'm used to being better than I was.
24.__A prisoner of the moment
` Let me out of here!! I want to think about what I want to have for lunch one of these days!
` ...I actually do think about what I intend to do for the day now - though it only turns out the way I planned about one quarter of the time.
25.__Frequent traffic violations
` Due to not being able to focus on driving, I have a lot of hairy moments.
` ...Only a few hairy moments now.
26.__Frequent, impulsive job changes
` This is the reason I don't want to get another job until I know what I want to do.
` ...I think I like acting, because it involves going from one project to another.
27.__Tendency to embarrass others
` One of many downfalls. And I don't even realize it until it's too late.
` ...Not as much as before - even when my brain is on 'spin cycle'!
28.__Lying or stealing on impulse
` I try to be a good little chipmunk... I TRY!!!
` ...I have a better hold on myself because I can see what I'm like better.
Poor Organization
29.__Poor organization and planning, trouble maintaining an organized work/living area
` All of my stuff is strewn about the lab. It is nearly impossible to think of or commit to any chores unless they are part of my daily routine - since I shower each day, I often do the dishes because I bring them in the bathtub with me!
` Errands? Forget it! It usually takes me about two days to two months just to get one thing done!
` Organization? What's that?
` ...In more recent times, my days are packed with many more errands than ever before. Sometimes to the point where I cannot get online to update my blogs! *gasp*
30.__Chronically late or chronically in a hurry
` This is practically synonymous with having to be somewhere at a particular time.
` ...Sometimes I'm actually early now!
31.__Often have piles of stuff
` Here, there, on the chair....
` I think it would still be much the same if it weren't for the new shelves to hold my piles of unfinished stuff. But, at least I occasionally put stuff back where I got it from.
32.__Easily overwhelmed by tasks of daily living
` I can scarcely formulate an idea in my head long enough to carry it out, if it happens at all. I even frequently abort missions to get up off my butt and look out the window. It's a lot of work to keep on track - so many thoughts in my head are pulling at me unless I am very tired (low brain activity) or taking Ritalin.
` ...I'm only overwhelmed when I have more than two immensely crucial things to do.
33.__Poor financial management (late bills, check book a mess, spending unnecessary money on late fees)
` One of many reasons I don't have much money.
` ...I'm starting to save. Slightly. Also, Lou Ryan owes me well over a thousand bucks.
Problems Getting Started and Following Through
34.__Chronic procrastination or trouble getting started
` Every day for almost every thing. Unless I have someone to help get me motivated.
` ...If I'm not tense, I'm not so paralyzed that I need the help.
35.__Starting projects but not finishing them, poor follow through
` I have about a thousand things I've started - not many that I've actually completed. This includes chores, artwork, genetic tracking, writing, musical compositions, plans for world domination - everything I do, there are piles of unfinished things in my life both figuratively and literally.
` ...I still have a backlog of unfinished stuff, but now at least I don't add more very often.
36.__Enthusiastic beginnings but poor endings
` Often I am enthusiastic, but that usually is not enough to keep me focused all the way through - my enthusiasm wearing off is normal for me. (Would I finish this if Lou Ryan were not sitting next to me?)
` As long as I can keep cool, I can generally finish things. Just gotta stay focused. Being distracted causes stress and boredom!
37.__Spends excessive time at work because of inefficiencies
` Getting anything done for me often takes about six hours longer than I had intended.
` ...To note something that happened a year before, which I didn't fully understand the significance of: Back when I didn't have the internet and so had to go to the library for all my blogging and email needs, I generally couldn't get anything done in the hour allotted me before the computer kicked me off.
` One day, the library was not full of people talking and whispering and asking me questions, which I thought was Quite Odd. For once, I actually checked my email accounts and my blogs, and pasted in a new blog post - everything was done before the 2-Minute Warning!
` Amazed at this, I put my mouse pointer up to log off the computer, and was amazed to find that only fifteen minutes had elapsed.
` I stared at the monitor - then got back online to do something else!
` I understand, now, that if people are bothering me or whispering, my thinking slows down several times below normal, and is very patchy and intermittent. Whispers and voices are literally interference.
` In my math classes, we didn't have teachers as much as we had directions to follow (which I didn't even look at) and didn't have to be in class to do our work. So, I just didn't come in. On test days, I would try to find a quiet room. When I couldn't, I would fail the test. But, when an adjacent classroom was available and I took the test in there, I got only As.
` My storming out of various rooms because the people I repeatedly told to be quiet as I was taking a test didn't listen to me did not help my grades.
` I now understand that it's necessary to get people to shut the hell up or just stop and give up, because I just can't do these things under those conditions. Ritalin does not help in these situations, either, so I've learned to disengage and stop my pursuit.
` Indeed, when someone say something when I'm typing here, I put down the keyboard and listen because trying to keep typing is very painful and I'm not in the least productive anyway - unless writing a bunch of random stuff, full of typos, and erasing it because it doesn't make sense is considered productive.
38.__Inconsistent work performance
` Sometimes I have enough energy to carry myself through and get things right, though usually it runs out and I get stuck somewhere in the middle.
` This happens, but generally for only things that are not a top priority.
Negative Internal Feelings
39.__Chronic sense of under achievement, feeling you should be much further along in your life than you are
` It's the story of my life.
40.__Chronic problems with self-esteem
` It's the sub-plot of my life.
` ...Since I'm finding that I'm good at more and more things, I don't feel so barren of merit.
41.__Sense of impending doom
` Never mind the 'impending' part. Seriously, it is hard to accept my life because it is so good. For some reason I think I am going to lose it all.
` ...I think I can hang on by now, if at all possible.
42.__Mood swings
` Me? Mood swings? Why I oughtta....
` ...Not so much anymore.
43.__Negativity
` Sometimes - I used to have a major problem with depression, now I don't think I'm so negative after all.
` ...Nah, I know more about what I'm really capable of, so I don't feel so bad anymore.
44.__Frequent feeling of demoralization or that things won't work out for you
` All the time. And is it true? Almost all the time....
` ...Hmm. Sometimes I actually do things correctly and nothing bad happens. Amazing!
Relational Difficulties
45.__Trouble sustaining friendships or intimate relationships, promiscuity
` I do have trouble being close to people, and it's hard to feel like I'm really friends with someone. It's also sometimes hard to feel much of anything, really. I do love my Lou Ryan - though sometimes I feel nothing, and it's a relief when the love pours back.
` Also, thank goodness for orgies.
` ...Did I say that? Of course I was joking, since orgies do nothing for me. I'm sexually dysfunctional, remember? Oh yeah, and I'm a little better at having stable feelings towards people.
46.__Trouble with intimacy
` I only feel like I'm being intimate every once in a while.
` ...Ditto, though probably more frequently.
47.__Tendency to be immature
` Whoever thought of that one is a real stupid-head!
` ...I have faced serious developmental blockages over the years. Can you tell?
48.__Self-centered; immature interests
` It is sad, it is true, it is something I try not to do. I talk about myself in response to what people say about other things because I feel the need to relate to everything that way. If it's not in my experience, it is a mystery.
` ...Now that I have a bit more perspective, I'm not really as narcissistic/egocentric unless my anxiety is very high.
49.__Failure to see others' needs or activities as important
` One great reason to get involved in other people's activities! I try not to be self-centered, really I do! I know it's a problem. And look at how many times I use the word 'I'! Everything's about me!
` ...Now I can sometimes see why other people would react certain ways to things, rather than guess based on patterns.
50.__Lack of talking in a relationship
` I have trouble formulating sentences, or being motivated enough to say things that I'm thinking of saying. Of course, when I take Ritalin I just automatically say what I need to say, and can communicate clearly.
` ...I'm getting better at thinking of what to say all the time, as well as when and what to say. Gone are the days of 'I was just thinking that' and 'I was just going to mention that!'
51.__Verbally abusive to others
` Not really - I know what it's like to be verbally abused, so I tend not to.
52.__Prone to hysterical outburst
` Oh my god!! That's so true!! *sniff*
` ...Hardly ever.
53.__Avoids group activities
` I like being with just one or two other people - interacting with too many others is overwhelming.
` ...I can handle more than two individuals, as long as I don't have to make negotiations or decisions with several!
54.__Trouble with authority
` I just walked out of an emergency room the other day, does that mean anything? I have issues with doing what other people tell me unless I think it's right.
` ...Since I have more control over my self, I don't fear others controlling me. Much easier to cope.
Short Fuse
55.__Quick responses to slights that are real or imagined
` Only if someone misunderstands the way I am. Usually when I get irked for any reason I don't say anything unless I need to correct someone's misperceptions of myself.
` ...Same, though I'm usually not as offended anymore.
56.__Rage outbursts, short fuse
` No, I don't think so, though I used to smash holes in walls.
` ...Now that my mind has a 'higher' setting, I'm more defensive of that setting. But at least I'm not enraged.
Frequent Search For High Stimulation
57.__Frequent search for high stimulation (bungee jumping, gambling, race track, high stress jobs, ER doctors, doing many things at once, etc.)
` I need a lot of stimulation to distract me from the annoying things in my head - know where I can find skydiving lessons?
` ...Sometimes I just like to sit down and not think at all. Rest, for once! Usually it requires Ritalin....
58.__Tendency to seek conflict, be argumentative or to start disagreements for the fun of it
` Have you read my blogs? That's all they seem to be about! Conflicts, arguments, and boy do I love debates! I get really pissed when people say they don't care about logic. I get even more pissed when they say I think I know everything. If I knew everything, then why do I ask so many questions?
` ...I enjoy debates, I'm just more reserved now because being brash does not win friends.
Tendency To Get Stuck (thoughts or behaviors)
59.__Tendency to worry needlessly and endlessly
` All the time. I almost never stop, even when I'm supposed to be having fun. It's very stressful.
` ...Yay! I can stop worrying now! The anxiety goes away, and guess what? I can think better because of it!
60.__Tendency toward ADHD ictions (food, alcohol, drugs, work)
` Cute word. Yes, constant food, intoxicants (only when I'm feeling horrible), walking a mile every day it's warm... I need those just to function.
` ...I find that working out each day gives me what I need to function - my digestive system speeds up so much that I can keep my brain's energy levels constant without constantly eating.
` Perhaps this is a digestion thing more than an addiction. Oh, and if it means anything, a quiz I took shows that I am 54% addicted to blogging.
` More than just blogging, writing is an addiction (or rather a passion) - blogging is just the form of writing I'm habituated to the most. However, I am now able to disengage in what I'm writing if it's taking too long, whereas before I was not.
` Now, talking to myself could be considered an addiction because it causes thinking disruptions....
Switches Things Around
61.__Switches around numbers, letters or words
` I don't know what is meant by this, though I do at least two different versions. Version one - I get confused about how to spell things, though my real weak point is 'number dyslexia', which is the reason that most math problems I have to write on a separate sheet of paper are wrong.
` Version two - I'm so good at making bad puns that I deserve to be shot!
` ...Huh? Wow... I had a problem spelling things? I would not have known but for the above writing!
62.__Turn words around in conversations
` If I'm the slightest bit nervous, I can barely speak coherently due to my words getting mixed up. I also used to get male and female pronouns switched constantly, which was really embarrassing.
` ...Wow! I'm barely ever that nervous or drained to the point where that happens!
Writing/Fine Motor Coordination Difficulties
63.__Poor writing skills (hard to get information from brain to pen)
` I have a hard time writing because my pen is not fast enough - unless I am very calm, I often have to write truncated sentences if I want to get anything across.
` This is why I do all of my writing via computer. (Which can be bad because the power goes off all the time.)
` ...Yay for the power not going off all the time! But hey, sometimes I seem to be able to hold stuff in my brain long enough to write stuff out longhand.
64.__Poor handwriting, often prints
` Yes; this is why I cannot write in cursive. I can at least read my printing most of the time!
65.__Coordination difficulties
` I am so clumsy that I used to slam my head in the car door all the time! My head was fine until the other day when I almost gave myself a concussion walking into a door because I couldn't focus. There was blood everywhere.
` I'm a bit more aware of my surroundings vs. my body. That's why, on the camping trip I got back from today, I didn't have as much trouble concentrating on finding my footing with thick hiking boots, a 25-lb pack, not to mention my barely-sensate feet.
` I also knew whether or not my pack was unbalanced, which is glorious, you could say: Last time, I spent the whole trip heaving my backpack to my right side just to take a step with my right foot. "Quit waddling" indeed! It was the only way I was able to walk!
The Harder I Try The Worse It Gets
66.__Performance becomes worse under pressure.
` Infinitely; pressure seems to cause me to fall into a coma.
` ...I don't feel like I'm under pressure as much as I used to.
67.__Test anxiety, or during tests your mind tends to go blank
` Yes, if I do not have Ritalin then my mind is a big sheet of white paper. I feel like I'm hanging on a trapeze in the dark.
` ...I don't have test anxiety anymore at all.
68.__The harder you try, the worse it gets
` Trying just causes me to go slow. It's like Zeno's Paradox - the more I try to keep up, the more I'm guaranteed not to finish. Just the other week I tried to read nine pages for school. After about six hours I decided that five pages wasn't good enough progress for me to continue.
` ...I just learned to take some frickin' breaks!
69.__Work or schoolwork deteriorates under pressure
` Unless I have Ritalin, all I can think about is the pressure!
` ...If there are things to be done, rather than getting trapped under pressure I take a break or do something else.
70.__Tendency to turn off or become stuck when asked questions in social situations
` This happens about five times a day. Sometimes I can't even answer at all and just stand there looking stupid.
` ...Barely ever.
71.__Falls asleep or becomes tired while reading
` Sometimes I use it as a handy trick when I can't sleep from all the crap running through my head!
` ...I don't need help falling asleep, though at night I still get somewhat sleepy when I read.
Sleep/Wake Difficulties
72.__Difficulty falling asleep, may be due to too many thoughts at night
` Yes, unless I am absolutely exhausted I frequently have so many thoughts and/or worries going through my head that I can't tell myself to shut up and go to sleep. It's so hard to ignore them!
` ...Not a usual occurrence anymore.
73.__Difficulty coming awake (may need coffee or other stimulant or activity before feeling fully awake)
` Most of my life I have felt like I was only half awake between times when I was asleep. I have a tremendous problem with waking up - Lou often has to jump on top of me and shake me many times before I wake up. In fact, the other day when he did this, I didn't even wake up at all!
` ...Even if the aliens from the planet Kittar don't wake me up by ripping across the carpet and me in the process, it's not so hard to get moving.
Low Energy
74.__Periods of low energy, especially early in the morning and in the afternoon
` Both of those are my favorite times to be tempted to have a siesta. However I don't unless I absolutely can't stay awake. In the evening, I tend to suddenly 'wake up' more, and if I don't, it's an early bedtime for me!
` ...Unless I exert myself, I don't need a nap, though when I am experiencing certain hormonal levels I can scarcely refuse one. Perhaps I was mentally exhausted before - anxiety can really take it out on someone!
75.__Frequently feeling tired
` "I'm so tired" has got to be among my top ten most commonly said phrases.
` ...Now it's "I need to work out!"
Sensitive To Noise Or Touch
76.__Startles easily
` Yes, and I have no idea why, especially because there's nothing to be afraid of!
` ...Nope. I guess I'm just not high-strung anymore.
77.__Sensitive to touch, clothes, noise and light
` HELL YEAH! More than anything in the world, clothing and sounds have been the things to piss me off throughout my life. I even wrote a blog post about it a really long time ago...:
` Well, the 'test' ends here, I presume that was the last question. So, what have I established? That whatever is wrong with me - definitely symptoms of ADD or even ADHD - at least seems to be improving.
` Anyway, I have a few things I need to finish besides this blog post. It's been nice visiting, but I really must go. Ta ta!
` Hey, look! Shoes!
` Sorry about that. It seems I've been living with so little focus that I can scarcely function without some kind of intervention. What's that like? Here's a little something I wrote toward the end of January 2007, back when I was just starting to try Lou Ryan's Ritalin:` I get overwhelmed by random thoughts whether or not I like doing what I'm doing. That means that even when I'm doing something I really like, I can't enjoy it much (if at all) because my mind constantly distracts me.` Here's the crazy thing - as my Ritalin treatment has continued, I've been having a much better idea of how to control what is going on in my head. I've noticed that the only way I can complete projects, carry out experiments, or formulate plots to take over the world, is when I'm in a quiet room. Also, anxiety stops me from having any coherent train of thought at all.
` Day in, day out, it's like trying to watch a TV that is surrounded by a lot of other TVs on completely different channels!
` Amazingly, taking Ritalin makes them completely go away, and this also usually takes away all my anxiety. (Having no sense of focus and just randomly bumping into things as you try to go about your life is very stressful!) With the way cleared, I can do anything I want - any task, errand, chore, and best of all, I can finally have fun and stop feeling like a wrung-out towel.
` It's almost too good to be true - I sometimes stop and look over my shoulder because it seems too quiet and I almost expect to see distracting thoughts hiding behind me! It's just unreal.
` My standards of functionality have been raised!
` Not only has ignoring irritating things gotten me into serious trouble, but it's forced me to stay at the edge of a nervous breakdown for most of my life! (This explains my low productivity, which I've reluctantly thought of as 'laziness'.) I only discovered a large part of what's been making my life a living hell about a week ago - not removing myself from things that irritate me (or removing them from me)!` ....Holy schizzzzznettttt! I still have problems with this, of course, but not as much, probably because I'm less overwhelmed with everything else in the entire universe.
` In the past, if something bothered me (i.e. being cold, wearing really irritating clothing, hearing a constant, really annoying sound), I just said to myself; 'Oh, I'll live with it. No big deal.' Well, a lot of those 'no big deals' have been keeping me in a very awkward and detrimental state of anxiety for... well, my whole life, pretty much.
...
` For me, it's almost like a prickling sensation and a general feeling of revulsion, like having a bunch of gnats biting me: I remember when I was a small child, trying on clothing at stores. I kept telling my mom 'these clothes have pins in them!' over and over, which she eventually would break down and yell at me for. Well, I couldn't figure out just why, but I did feel a 'sticking' sensation, and I wasn't fooled by the fact that I couldn't see anything!
` Why this happens, I don't know, but it still does.
` I always thought it was really ridiculous, because it sounds so stupid! How could something like that have any large impact on someone's life, right? That's why I ignored it - I figured if I kept wearing the same things, I'd 'grow up' and 'get used to it.'
` Wrong! I really didn't think that being irritated by your clothing could cause a huge problem. But it really can!
...
` Very unpleasant - makes me very tense and my blood pressure and heart rate go right up.
` Does anybody else have that? It's like, the lighter something touches me, the more I want to pull away from it or itch that area. Wearing a very thin, featherweight and rough polyester shirt with short, ruffly sleeves that someone bought for me caused lots of anxiety, twitching, watery eyes and scratching. My full-body numbness actually seems to add to this problem, because I can feel even less.
` Less sensation = more irritation. I question how that can happen, but I don't question that it happens.
Ta ta!

A Journalism Assignment
` I am working on Yet Another Blog Post That Attempts To Explain Skepticism More Clearly, and this time I have a somewhat different approach. In fact, the first half is more or less finished - though written on paper - but I'm too lazy to actually type it in and add the rest of it, then edit it, etc.
` In fact, the post relates to what this quarter's psychology teacher says about what science is. (His is different than the angle I've been writing from.) But, before I finish that I thought I'd pop in to post something else school-related; two more assignments from my Journalism class! (I've been wanting to get my final, but the teacher won't be in her office until next fall, so I have to wait until September to get it back....)
` The first assignment (actually, it is the first part of one assignment) is based off of the minutes of a (fictitious) council meeting. As you can see, it is written better than my post thus far:
` Cheery, huh? That's why I'm not going to be a journalist - at least one who has to write things like that! Personally, I prefer writing about new inventions, discoveries and technology, including the newfound ability to clone viable sperm! (Now men who may have genetic defects concerning sperm production can pass those defects on to the next generation! Whoo!)
` Well, I've got to go - that crawling sound is emanating from the sink drain again....

~~At the last City Council meeting, a Vietnamese potbellied pig helped to persuade members to declassify them as farm animals. The result is that these pet pigs can be legally kept within city limits.` The second part of the assignment was writing another article based on a (completely made-up) police report:
~~Janie Finck, the owner of the present pig Bo Jackswine, said of the outcome; “Thank you very much. Bo thanks you very much. I am very happy. And Bo did excellent. He was definitely a ham.”
~~The pig didn’t speak, of course, but he did charm council members with his endearing, puppy-like behavior into overturning the ordinance passed last week which banned them from the city.
~~The owner of two potbellied pigs, Kris Guidice, was greatly relieved. “I took off work,” she said. “I haven’t slept in two days because I’ve been so worried about it.”
On a less triumphant note, it was also agreed during the meeting that five positions would be cut from the police department in order to save the county money.
~~Police Chief Samuel Safety at first objected this cut because the police force is greatly needed with crime rates on the rise. When it was suggested that the office workers at the police station could be the only ones to lose their jobs, the proposition was approved unanimously.
~~Other items included considering the rezoning of 34 acres of agricultural land for building homes on, and considering spending $44,000 on vehicles for the city’s maintenance personnel.
~~In a few months, however, the one thing that anyone present is sure to remember about the meeting will be the potbellied pigs. Upon getting to know Bo Jackswine, Vice Mayor Charles Shorter even considered getting one himself.
~~John Hood, owner of a potbellied pig named Gidget, commented; “If was either they pass it or I’d have moved out. You can steal my truck or anything else, but you better leave my pig alone.”
~~A college student was killed last night at his job at Tom’s Pizza during an attempted robbery. The suspect, William McDowell has yet to be tried.
~~The victim, twenty-year-old Thomas J. Alvarez, was working behind the counter when McDowell entered, concealing a handgun and looking for cash. It seemed as if he was about to order a pizza, but the gunman’s true intentions became apparent when Alvarez asked him what toppings he wanted: McDowell replied, “I really want all your money.”
~~The suspect then claims that Alvarez appeared to reach under the counter, prompting him to fire the bullet that quickly proved fatal. With Alvarez out of the way, he was free to run behind the counter to attempt to open the cash register. Finding this to be difficult, he threw the register on the floor before shooting it five or six times.
~~Giving up his struggle to get at the cash, eyewitnesses say McDowell ran outside and into an awaiting white Ford Mustang. Another man at the wheel drove the getaway vehicle off the premises.
~~The two suspects were evidently not counting on being followed. However, it happened that another employee, Andrew Caspenwall, was just arriving on the scene and pursued the suspects in his delivery vehicle.
~~As they were passing though the Pauley Park area, the suspects fired several shots at Caspenwall, missing him each time.
~~Caspenwall reported that the perpetrators’ vehicle was speeding so fast that when the driver attempted to turn onto Parkview Avenue, it skidded and flipped onto its side.
~~William McDowell was found inside, unhurt but dazed, and identified as the shooter. The other suspect is still at large.
~~McDowell says that his reason for the robbery is that he was strapped for money because he was jobless and had a substance abuse problem.
` Cheery, huh? That's why I'm not going to be a journalist - at least one who has to write things like that! Personally, I prefer writing about new inventions, discoveries and technology, including the newfound ability to clone viable sperm! Cop-out though it may be...
` ...You must admit that this little article I found is either funny or highly offensive, depending on what you agree with. It's called 'Psychics' Fail to Forsee Their Own Fortunes by Joe Nickell.
` Apparently, Philadelphia's 'psychics' have been shut down for fraud - not that they saw it coming. To my amusement, in 1995 they also didn't realize they were being duped by a Newscenter 10 undercover unit, led by Herb Denenberg:
` In addition, Nickell noted that when he did not reveal his identity to famous 'psychic' Phil Jordan, he completely believed that Nickell was someone besides who he was! (Happens all the time, actually.) And, if you, dear subject, don't feel like reading this short article, at least have a look at the last paragraph (though if you do, then don't let this spoil it!):
` Apparently, Philadelphia's 'psychics' have been shut down for fraud - not that they saw it coming. To my amusement, in 1995 they also didn't realize they were being duped by a Newscenter 10 undercover unit, led by Herb Denenberg:
Denenberg’s team enlisted a fifteen-year-old schoolgirl named Kate. Although she was safely at home (for example playing softball in her front yard), the psychics were told that she had been missing since January.` That is not surprising, since whenever a lot of different 'psychics' call a police station with 'information' about a tricky case, their input is no better than a bunch of people making up their own answers, which turn out to be quite different from one another. (Whether they themselves feel that way or not, this is indeed the effect.) In fact, despite what they may say, police typically find their 'tips' to be too vague (and later on, inaccurate) to be helpful.
Some psychics “saw” her experiencing physical harm; one collected a fee of $50 for reporting her “confined against her will”; and another charged $180 to divine that the girl had run away and was “probably pregnant.” While one psychic envisioned her just two miles from home, another saw her far away in Florida.
Not one among the several seers ever divined the truth, that the teenager was not missing and that Channel 10 was conducting a sting operation.
Many times in my several decades of paranormal investigation, I have visited palmists, card readers, astrologers, mediums, and clairvoyants. Not one ever mentioned the profound fact that I had a daughter and two grandsons I was unaware of (until, wonderfully, she discovered me in 2003) (Nickell 2004; 2005).` Yes, and their customers didn't. That's why the police sometimes have to get involved in these things.
At least one of the Philadelphia storefront psychics whose business had been closed tacitly conceded at the time that he and his fellow seers were pretenders, “What we do is entertainment,” he sniffed. We knew that.

Now here's a theory I can get into....
` I'm being negligent of this blog, because I kind of have a life now. However I read this article the other day at the Spoof and laughed a bunch. Behold!
Flaws Found in Intelligent Design Theory` How's that for a parody? And a really satirical and outlandish one as well! Well, I'm off to life more of this thing I call a 'life'.

[Photo] Dr Harvey and his assistant Wilma Val Putin examine DNA errors.
In an announcement sure to rock the scientific world, Dr. Jack Harvey, a noted biochemist, claims he has found several flaws in the scientifically regarded theory of "intelligent design".
"There are several aspects to the theory that just don't fit together", Dr. Harvey claims. "Penguins, for example. Why would any intelligent being design such a bird in such a harsh environment unless as a cruel joke". Harvey claims that the birds awkward motions and inability to fly are not intelligent at all. "In fact, Dr. Harvey continues, "this bird is the work of a total moron".
Dr Harvey also claims that mosquitos, flies and many forms of bacteria are also not intelligently designed. "Not to mention ostriches", Harvey says, "Have you ever seen a more ridiculous looking animal? If I was the designer I'd be embarrassed to have my name attached to it."
Harvey claims that even human beings have faults which a truly intelligent being would have solved before placing them on Earth. "Some humans are fine", he said, "while others have very large noses, floppy ears, mental problems, tend toward obesity or develop some sort of illness. A truly intelligent creator would not have allowed such discrepancies".
Dr. Rob Weinstein, a respected molecular biologist, disagreed with Harvey's statements. "Harvey has no idea what he's talking about", Weinstein stated, "even the smartest of us make little mistakes. To err is human!"
Some scientists say that Harvey's claims bolster the ridiculous idea of "evolution".

Why do we have SETI?
` I was just listening to the Point of Inquiry podcast where the host, DJ Grothe, interviews an important scientist/director/chair at SETI, Jill Tartar. As usual, I thought it had some information that my readers might be interested in, and so I thought I'd provide you with a quick overview:
` First, I'll start out with my own personal transcript of Tom Flynn's 'Did you know?' I think some people might be interested in it....
` Our asking whether or not we are the only life forms in the universe is a very important question, and since it is also a testable question - and therefore scientific in nature - there are ways to find out!
` So far, we are limited to studying this phenomenon without actually venturing to other solar systems. (Although perhaps we won't have to go that far?) The Carl Sagan Center for the Study of Life in the Universe has been around for a long time - although the name is new - and the people working there have done a lot of valuable and important work. (Unfortunately, almost nobody of the public has heard about any of this....)
` On the other hand, the SETI program has merely been going on since 1984, which dates back to a time before there was even a word for astrobiology! Instead of trying to find a way to determine whether or not there is physical evidence of possible life on other worlds, the idea behind SETI is to search the skies for signs of extraterrestrial technology.
` A lot of things have changed since Jill Tartar was a graduate student. For one thing, cosmologists' predictions that there must be other planets orbiting other stars have been confirmed, with 210 extrasolar planets having been discovered to date. For another thing, the earth has been found to be more bio-friendly than we had previously thought with the discovery of extremophilic organisms that, for example, need to live in salt with no water, or in boiling battery acid!
` And don't think that these discoveries are not practical! For example, such life forms could help us understand how to cure diseases - even cancer! Also, discovering the biochemical reactions that occur when rocks are smashed open may not only help us understand how life could arise, but could also shed light on a new way to predict when an earthquake may happen!
` Tartar is also working on building the Allen Telescope Array, a radio telescope that consists of a formation of 350 satellite dishes. Not only will it be used to help find the answers for the 'usual' astronomical inquiries, it will be used to rigorously search for any anomalies which may come from alien technology.
` So how is this proposed to be done? One way of doing this is to use optical telescopes to look for a flashing pattern of light that would indicate that someone is trying to signal our planet with a laser or something similar. Surely that is one way that any intelligent life out there could use to try to get our attention. But would they? Another way, of course, is radio signals:
` Nature seems to be able to make all kinds of radio 'signals', including those that can go for long distances unhindered - such as long-wave radio. However, from everything we know about astrophysics, nature should not be able to create a single, flat tone. So, the discovery of such a tone will either tell us that nature can make a compressed frequency and we didn't know about it, or that indeed it was made by intelligent life!
` Yes, these sound like very crude techniques, and this is true because we're the 'dumbest kids on the block that can do this'. I should hope that someday we will find yet more methods to look for signals. Many people have asked, however, since coming into contact with alien technology seems futile (at least for today) why do it?
` I admit, it does seem silly because they haven't gotten any results yet. But no results in a project of literally astronomical proportions doesn't mean that you should quit. They were right about other planets being out there, and all evidence suggests that there is a a high probability of other life forms in this galaxy and probably others.
` The SETI researchers are hoping that some of this life is not only intelligent, but that it has developed technology that utilizes long-wave radio waves (or at least other types of radiation) for communication. Potentially, they could at some point detect our inadvertent broadcasts from the past, and if we point our telescopes at their home, we could detect their radio signals.
` Of course, even if this were true, they would have to be detectable within the lifetime of our species - not a billion years ago - so there are major time constraints as well.
` In any case, if they're out there they could be found by us! Or, we could be found by them!
` Even if our plan does not seem terribly plausible at present, SETI will go on because the rewards are too great. Wouldn't it be wonderful if we someday had solid evidence of alien life? If there was, it is possible that we could find a way to come into contact with them - as long as we did not receive a video transmission of their futile attempts to stop a gigantic asteroid that destroyed the planet! We would have everything to gain and nothing to lose - as long as they were not hostile toward us!
` Think of the biology lessons that could be learned! Knowledge of alien biology, alien technology, and anything else that could be learned would be infinitely valuable! And think of this; if some kind of bizarre life form that lived somewhere else in this galaxy - or perhaps a visitor from another galaxy - could learn to communicate with us intelligently, would that for its own sake seem miraculous?
` Ask yourself what it would be like if this strange-looking creature (drawn even more strangely with a mouse than otherwise) could find a way to talk with us:
` That would certainly be mind-blowing! But even if we did not get a chance to directly meet the aliens, it would greatly affect the perspective of many people! The galaxy would seem so much more wondrous than ever - and we would not seem so special! Think of the reprocussions!
` And there's another bonus: if we learned much about the way extraterrestrials look and act, then the more bigoted individuals of the human race may realize that we humans are not all that different from one another! We're all the same species, and we all have a common human nature! As for life from completely different planets, I would expect it to possess natural behaviors so foreign that they could be very difficult to comprehend!
` Still, extraterrestrials would presumably be something like humans: They would at least have a social nature because that would allow disparate settlements of them to work together and pool their resources and technologies, making them thousands of times more powerful than just one individual. They would also have to be able to cooperate well enough to make that work!
` Other than that, I would expect them to have such odd quirks that perhaps we would never understand many of them!
` It would also force anyone who believes that the universe was made for our species, or that we are the pinnacle of existence to rethink their assumptions. (In fact, there are still quite a few people in this country who believe - for religious purposes - that the earth is the center of the universe!)
` This is a big universe, and we are small in it. Who knows what is going on out there? That is why we must try to figure it out! However, people who feel threatened by scientific progress aren't helping other people come to this realization. For example, just the idea that we were not lovingly sculpted by a deity makes some go over the edge and fight back with something that they hope to replace not only certain areas of science with, but the very basic concept of it!
` First, I'll start out with my own personal transcript of Tom Flynn's 'Did you know?' I think some people might be interested in it....
` Did you know that NASA used to have its own program of SETI, the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence? [Actually, I did!] But in 1993, Nevada senator Richard Bryan successfully introduced an ammendment that eliminated all funding for it. The cost of the program was less than point-one percent [.1%] of NASA's annual budget and amounted to about a nickel per taxpayer per year. The senator cited 'budget pressures' as his reason for ending NASA's involvement with SETI. [It seems that only he knows why!]` The point of the program is this: Could we be alone? It's a difficult question to answer, although we know - because we exist - that the laws of physics do not prevent life from forming on a planet! (Also, there are many valuable discoveries that inadvertently can be and have been made along the way!)
` Did you know that many observers feel that NASA's 2007 budget shifts funding away from scientific research? Meanwhile, the SETI institute, a nonprofit corporation, gets much of its research sponsored by NASA. In surpport for the emerging field of astrobiology in the upcoming fiscal year 2007, though, has been cut by half. [What a bummer!]
` Did you know that the signal processing techniques developed and used at SETI have already been applied to the detection of breast cancer? [Really? That's what I call a successful technology!] And did you know that according to the Drake equation, the number of intelligent civilizations existing in our galaxy alone, that might be broadcasting signals, could be in the millions? [Even if you plugged in numbers that are so small as to seem unlikely, you will come out with a sizeable-enough number, say, a hundred!]
` Among the factors multiplied together are the number of sun-like stars in our galaxy, and the number of habitable planets orbiting around them, and the amount of time it takes a civilization to develop advanced technology. I'll bet you didn't know any of that! [Actually, I did... and all of this is good to know!]
` Our asking whether or not we are the only life forms in the universe is a very important question, and since it is also a testable question - and therefore scientific in nature - there are ways to find out!
` So far, we are limited to studying this phenomenon without actually venturing to other solar systems. (Although perhaps we won't have to go that far?) For example, just the idea that we were not lovingly sculpted by a deity makes some go over the edge and fight back with something that they hope to replace not only certain areas of science with, but the very basic concept of it!
` Tartar: From a scientific perspective, you look around you and over time and over space, everything evolves. Everything changes over time, that's all evolution means, it really isn't so terribly threatening. Nevertheless, certain groups have decided to stigmatize evolution, if you wish, to make it in conflict with a religious belief, and that is what has, at the base of all this discussion, created a problem.` ...This to reiterate everything I've said before. And now, I must be going! The sky is clear and I judge that it requires enjoying before winter takes hold!
` There are other religious traditions which can fully absorb the concept of everything changing over time, including life, humans, as well as molecules and microbes, and stars and galaxies, that's well-suited to certain religious traditions, and it is celebrated by some of the oldest traditions.
` But there are other traditions which find it necessary to make humans absolutely the pinnacle and special in this universe and the universe special for them. And those are the religious belief systems which come in conflict with this idea of change over time and their being and ??? where humans did not exist, and looking in the future, at a time where, once again, humans may not exist.
` That's very uncomfortable for them, and I think, as a scientist, when I can look at the detailed evidence for the interconnectedness of everything that we call life on this planet, I can find no argument that supports the specialness of humans, which would need to set them aside and outside of this scheme of change over time in evolution.
` So, it just is a hot button topic, because now you're talking about what people believe. Not is or what isn't, but what people believe. And belief systems have always been there. Science has not. Science is a new way of knowing, and a very effective way, because it allows us to make predictions and test those predictions and decide what particular outcome is most likely, and what explanation is going to be the most correct that we can come up with at this time.
` Grothe: Irrespective of the beliefs of the scientists.
` Tartar: That is true, and yes, the scientists are perfectly capable - and many do - of holding their own separate belief system. So science is what science is, some other people hold other belief systems, and that's fine. The problem is, when you say that a particular religious tradition or belief system should usurp the teaching of science, should be substituted for, or even taught as the same as, because they are different.

Education and educated guesses...
` ...I highly suggest the former before attempting the latter.
` Why is it that I keep running into people who lack basic understanding of some extremely elementary subject, causing them to reach a totally backwards conclusion when they make assumptions about it?
` Is it because I have a lot of knowledge about many subjects, and would thus notice certain things most people wouldn't? Or are these just the normal, semi-random knowledge defecits of normal people?
` I am currently lacking the time I would need to ponder this any longer, so without further ado:
` Not too long ago, I was talking about allergies with this really awesome girl, who completely confounded me by saying:
` "I don't think that people are allergic to bee stings at all, I think they're allergic to pollen and just don't know it: I mean, there's no allergens on a stinger, so how else could you go into anaphylactic shock?"
` I don't usually speak up, but since I was looking right at her and because it was an easy thing to explain, I told her that bee stingers pump venom into the wound, and the venom by itself causes a reaction even if it is injected by a hypodermic needle.
` It also gives you that feeling that you're on fire, characteristic of bee stings.
` She told me that she had never been stung by a bee, and actually had no idea that bees were venomous! You learn something every day....
` Sometime later, I was talking to a friend while we were avoiding the sun under an umbrella when she said:
` "I think it's stupid that people think sunburns can cause cancer later on in life. It just doesn't make any sense."
` Since I wasn't looking at her at the time, nor did I feel very articulate, I didn't bother saying anything. Still, I can tell you that the short answer is because radiation from the sun damages your DNA: If the cell fails to repair this damage and thus cannot grow normally, it will go through apoptosis (programmed cell death) which is why your sunburn eventually flakes off like so much dandruff.
` Sometimes, in one of the millions of afflicted cells, a particular type of genetic damage allows the cell to continue growing, even though it cannot repair its DNA. This cell can then divide into a cancerous growth, though it can take twenty years before the symptoms become noticeable.
` Also, various studies have shown, for example, that if you develop a melanoma you have probably also had an unusually high amount of sunburn damage compared to most people. So, why would it be stupid to think that there's any connection?
` The biggest blunder of them all, I remember, happened back when I was still living in Ohio. I was talking about all kinds of stuff with this random guy and he said one of the most moronic things I have ever heard:
` "I think that you're still conscious after you die and you can feel everything that's being done to your body until it completely rots. So, you get to feel what it's like to be embalmed and cut open, and you even get to hear your own eulogy and everything. And as all your memories and stuff rot, you lose them one by one until you're totally unconscious. That's when you're really dead."
` Since I was directly engaged in conversation with him, I actually tried to speak up and said that if your sensory nerves are no longer transmitting signals, then you couldn't feel or hear or see anything even if you were still clearly conscious and alive. When you die, your delicate nerve fibers shrivel up and stop working.
` And he said (get ready!);
` "No, no... nerves are only for moving muscles."
` And continued on as if I hadn't said anything important. For a while, I just kind of stared at him in bewilderment. Evidently, he'd slept through biology class, or else never took it. Come to think of it, neither did I, but somehow, I still learned these things....
` Nevertheless, I know that there are certain kinds of nerves for facillitating movement. When they stop working, you can't move. But what he failed to comprehend is that sensation is also transmitted through nerves, albeit different ones.
` When sensation-delivering nerves are blocked or do not work anymore, you cannot feel signals from them and it feels like you are missing part of your body, even if you can still move it with your motor nerves. Being injected with Novocain is a good example of this. The very same thing applies to the nerves involved in the sense of sight, hearing, taste and smell.
` When you die, electrical signals eventually cease in all of your nerve cells. This includes your brain. When certain parts of your brain stop working, it affects your consciousness to some extent or another. Usually, you lose some aspect of your ability to perceive, to act, or to think - although when you are dead, all of your brain eventually stops working after several minutes.
` Therefore, what could be left to perceive or be perceived from any part of your nervous system?
` Tactile (touch) nerves, retinas, etc. are specialized parts of the nervous system, just like the left frontal lobe or the superior olive of the brain. It doesn't really matter what portion it is; if it is no longer transmits chemical and electrical signals, which requires heavy metabolizing and expending mass amounts of energy (which involves lots of sugars, neurotransmitters, neuropeptides etc), then they cannot contribute to your awareness.
` All in all, a complete lack of activity in the nervous system - even if this does not include the brain - means that you could not sense anything happening at all to your body.
` Where the hell people get this stuff about sensation not being supplied by nerves beats me. I mean, where do they think it comes from? Magic?
` Well, I can't seem to think of anything to top that one, though I do remember something of some small significance while I was internetless and mooching off the computers at Zippy's. One day, I heard the owner (of both Zippy and Zippy's) telling one of her customers about some kind of tea with 'Rubiose'. And I thought that sounded familiar, but I didn't make a connection until I saw a hand-lettered sign that said; 'Roobios'.
` I thought to myself; 'Oh no! she misspelled 'Rooibos!'', which is pronounced something like 'ROY-boss.'
` It's an Afrikaans word. Rooi I think means 'red' and bos means 'bush'. Or something to that effect. It's a strange African bush with antioxidant-filled leaves, which is where 'red tea' comes from - although the leaves can also be brewed without drying them, in which case you have what you could call green red tea!
` Curse me for knowing obscure things about tea and wanting to be a linguist.
` I like the fact that I can infer meanings of some Afrikaans words by simply knowing English, plus the words of some other languages: Wildebeest, as you may be able to tell, means 'wild beast' (or, more specifically, 'wild ox'), and bontebok means 'colorful buck/antelope' (bunt means 'colorful' in German).
` Of course, someone who does not pay as much attention to words can easily miss these things, though I think that it is best to make sure you know how to pronounce what you peddle.
` ...By the way, this reminds me of the best Afrikaans insult ever: Sit jou kop tussen die kooie se kont en wag tot die bul jou kom holnaai! It means; 'Stick your head in a cow's vagina and wait for the bull to buggar you!'
` If only I knew how to pronounce Afrikaans sentences....
` Hrm... what's the most recent thing I've caught? Well, just today, there was a photograph I received in an e-mail of a yellow canary finch hanging upside-down, with the subtitle; 'Now, that's one talented parrot!'
` Okay....
` I didn't save the picture, but I thought it was most obvious that it was indeed a canary and not a parrot. Now, let us review our animal identification skills from kindergarten....
` This is a parrot:
` These are canaries:
` The large and unusually-shaped beak is generally what people first notice as being distinctive about parrots (as opposed to other birds), but whoever wrote that caption apparently was oblivious to any shapes and proportions that are different between canaries and parrots!
` Perhaps this person called the canary a 'parrot' because it was brightly colored like parrots are. I know that people tend to do that, so they confuse two animals that have a similar general coloration even if they otherwise look different.
` Oddly, I don't seem to have that problem - quite the opposite: I tend to distinguish between animals based on body shape instead of markings. In fact, if I do misidentify a species, it is because I am going by shape, and any distinctive coloration doesn't register as being that important!
` Isn't that just... not normal?
` This explains the incident when I first glimpsed a quite shaggy-looking magpie in the distance, noted its long, erectile head crest, long tail, beak and legs, and thought its feet looked X-shaped; I figured that perhaps it was a species of roadrunner! Other people laughed, probably thinking that I was stupid for missing the fact that roadrunners are not black and white, whereas magpies are!
` ...But as far as I know, magpies are not supposed to have head crests! Had this one been moulting? In any case, since that blunderous incident I've taken care to get better at not ignoring the markings that animals sport.
` And yet, I've always been better at distinguishing between animals than other people. I've never had any trouble telling apart - for instance - brown bears from black bears that are brown, African from Asian elephants, nor white from black rhinos.
` As a child, especially, it drove me nuts that random people I overheard at the zoo evidently could not spot any differences between various animals that didn't at all look similar to me. For example, I ran into several people who could not tell apart the jaguar...
` ...from the cheetah!
` So, looking at the two animals in the same position here, it is impossible to miss that the jaguar is very stocky while the cheetah is built like a greyhound (hence its characteristic swiftness); the jaguar has a massive snout while the cheetah has quite a small muzzle; also, the jaguar's legs and tail are very short while the cheetah's are long and exaggerated.
` So, at the big cat enclosures, I would be telling people; "Can't you tell that they have completely different body types?"
` Plus, the markings are more than noticeably different, yet oddly I didn't catch on until after I learned how to tell them apart!
` Pretty strange, huh?
` And, that reminds me; for the record.... Tanuki are not raccoons! How many times do I have to tell people? Tanuki are a type of dog, for soup's sake!

` Still, someone that I know who was studying Japanese culture thought that raccoons live in Japan and are called tanuki! Well, that's just backwards, so I tried to tell him that this was not true, but he didn't believe me because 'tanuki' was translated as 'raccoon' in his reference books.
` ...I suppose that's typical: It was also translated as 'raccoon' in the movie Heisei Tanuki Gassen Ponpoko, which has stunned probably most American viewers because it depicts the tanuki spirits beating the crap out of police officers with their expanded testicles!
` Yes, the picture is not lying! If you'd like to know more about tanuki, their role in Japanese culture, and the reasons for some of the weird things in Ponpoko, I'd suggest checking out this post. Of course... Wikipedia has some more detailed articles on Tanuki spirits and the actual animal!
` Well, I think this post turned out to be strange (and wayyy too long!). I hope I have been a most, um, colorful know-it-all, because at least I'm the kind that usually makes sure I know what I'm talking about!
` Well, enjoy the bonus post!
